Food History Exhibits

Food History Exhibits

A number of wonderful organizations have created digital exhibits covering food topics that I think are interesting enough to share. Click the links below to see each exhibit. I'll update whenever I find a new one OR, please send any good ones my way.

Beans Are Bullets: War-Era Food Posters From the Collection of the National Agricultural Library

What America Ate - an interactive online exhibit and archive about food in the Great Depression.

Food Conservation During WWI - a one-page section of "Together We Win: The Philadelphia Home Front During the First World War."

Time of the Garden - an online exhibit about the role of government in encouraging the public to garden, including information about Victory Gardens during WWI and WWII.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Agricultural Library has several good exhibits, including:
  • George Washington Carver
  • How Did We Can? The Evolution of Home Canning Practices
  • Apron Strings and Kitchen Sinks: The USDA Bureau of Home Economics
  • "Farm To Table: 1914-1920," part of a larger exhibit on roadside stands and markets
